Crops of coffee, sugar cane and vegetables dot the countryside as if to suggest a booming economy. Horse drawn carts move the products down the steep hillsides to the market place. Men with machetes holstered on their side move from place to place harvesting their next products destined for the cities below. These hard-working families labor to purchase the necessities to exist, not usually for profit.

Mountain streams amplify a sound that will catch the ear from miles away. The streams hide the fact that they are deadly because they have no life in them. There are no fish, they have been fished out. The water has been contaminated with E-coli from animal and human feces. Streams are flow-regulated by the amount of rain, sometimes very placid, sometimes a torrent of flooding water. Either way, they deliver death and sickness when the rainy season is the worst. Belen Gualcho had a very serious outbreak of hepatitis just before we arrived. They believed the cause was from the water. In these remote areas, sanitation is not understood, nor practiced. Soap is a luxury, not a necessity.

We arrived in a remote village called Aguacatillo. (small avocado). A 4-wheel-drive, motorcycle or by mule is the way to get there. But, during the rainy season a mule or walking is the only way to get there. This is truly a beautiful place. It is approximately 20 kilometers from Belin Gualcho at 4,000 feet elevation. The residents depend on mountain streams for water. I have enclosed a picture of their water collection system where they have no chlorine regulators, just a storage container. They have pumps to get the water from the stream below, but that is it. Sickness from the water is a way of life for these dear people; that is until they discovered the WAPI. They told us that they don't get sick from the water any longer because they use the WAPI which has been in use for the past two years. The WAPI isn't the total solution for these warmhearted folks, but it does answer an immediate need until they can afford the chlorination device.

WAPIs for the World just sent 2,000 units to Honduras to aid their relief effort in Eastern Honduras where 1500 families lost their homes and everything they owned when water destroyed everything in its path. Thanks to our volunteers and suppliers who made it possible to send WAPIs. A big shout out to Ty Wheeler and the shipping company DHL who helped in our transport effort. We cannot do this alone. It takes many humanitarians dedicated to accomplishing this outreach. Also, Boy Scout Troop 320 in Vancouver, Washington produced and donated 850 units to this effort. Great job Scouts.

Want to get involved? We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Bob went from village to village testing the water on his November 2018 trip to Honduras. The results weren't good! All of the containers tested for E. Coli. The holding containers are not sterile, they need chlorine regulators. Also, the villagers don’t understand how to use chlorine and don’t have money to buy a regulator or chlorine needed for proper Chlorination.

Bob capture’s the water to test as it slowly goes down the hillside. The display of compassion and caring at this time of year is an amazing selfless expression of our love for one another. The unselfish act of giving, without measure, brings warmth to the giver and the receiver. This is what WAPIs for the World has experienced throughout the past year and what it seems, is the foundation of our goal.

We witnessed unselfish acts of kindness since our beginning back in 2010. This past year has been no exception. Since our devices are not for sale per say, we have managed to distribute over 4,000 units around the world this year and we are still able to purchase material because of others generous contributions to our effort. A great effort by the local boy scout troop 320, in Vancouver, Washington, made and assembled 850 units and donated over $2,300 to assist us in our effort to make and distribute them to countries such as Honduras, Haiti and Ghana.

Honduras now has two locations that are able to produce WAPIs and get them to those in need. Agua Pura Para El Pueblo sponsored my trip to Belen Gualcho, Honduras with enough materials to make and distribute 2,000 units to the local communities. To date, we have distributed over 60,000 plus units around different areas of the world, most recently to Honduras. Who would have thought that eight years ago we would have been able to achieve such an ambitious goal?

There are many families, as of now, that do not suffer from waterborne diseases because of the devotion of so many volunteers dedicated to the WAPI project. We are making a difference! The WAPI is a simple device created by Dr. Dale Andreatta, along with Fred Barrett engineered the basic design of the WAPI back in 1998. Dr. Robert Metcalf created the scientific study of the device. Dr. Metcalf is a retired microbiology professor Emeritus from the California State University, Sacramento, USA. Their effort has had a lasting effect on many people in need of potable water.

The WAPI itself seems so simple, and it is. It has a distinct capability of keeping humans healthy when used properly. Time after time we have been able to research our endeavors and found that this device works very effectively.

I first learned of the WAPI in 2010 while preparing for our trip to Zambia, Africa. We not only made WAPIs to take on our trip, we tested them with our Portable Medical Lab Testing Equipment that was donated by Dr. Metcalf himself.

The portable medical laboratories enable us to test for E-coli contaminated water anywhere in the world. These test kits are internationally recognized for accurate water testing ability. Colilert tubes and petrifilm is the basis for identification of E-coli, the bacteria that causes diarrhea. Each test we conducted with this equipment proved that when the WAPI was used as instructed, all harmful bacteria was eliminated. Our WAPI has a melting temperature of 154°F, which is well above pasteurization temperature at 149°F / 65°C, no matter where the water comes from, including the toilet. If you would like to do a water test of your local stream, contact me at 503-801-8642, and we will teach you how to use it.

There have been many contributors dedicated toward our effort in distributing WAPIs. Just recently, Boy Scout troop 0320 in Vancouver, Washington, USA made over 800 units that found their way into the mountains of Honduras where waterborne disease is very prevalent during the rainy times of the year. 1500 families on the eastern coast were flooded out of their homes by a four-foot-high wall of water and mud. A hurricane in the gulf virtually flushed their mud walls way, leaving nothing but poles and maybe a roof.

Thanks Troop 0320 Good Job!!!! And good job Grady and Morgan. Your outstanding leadership and commitment in helping others speaks volumes of your dedication and devotion for those around you. God’s blessings be with you and the Boy Scouts.

Otto Bamback and Chris Galligan worked very hard to develop an outstanding "WAPI making device" that has come to be known as the hot air cradle. The cradle holds a hot air blower (embossing tool) in place while heating one end of the WAPI tube. Pulling a handle down compress’ the open tube, literally pressing the ends together with a corrugated metal cast die placed in exact location to seal the top and bottom. They are great!!!! We have used them with local youth groups who want to make WAPIs. We have achieved great success making a superb well-made product. There are two communities in Honduras that are now making WAPIs to give to those in need. The hot air cradle concept makes a better formed WAPI.

As we have seen, working together, we can make a difference. Seeing the inclusiveness in everyone only inspires me to work harder. As we enter 2019, everything looks promising. Something new and different is on its way. I'll keep you all posted.

Merry Christmas To You All and May Gods Blessings Abound!
With Warm Regards,
Bob

Bob goes to Honduras

https://www.wapisfortheworld.com/bobs-happenings/bob-goes-to-honduras

https://www.wapisfortheworld.com/bobs-happenings/bob-goes-to-honduras#comments

Uncategorized

Water Source runs down the mountain based on the rainfall. The WAPIs are distributed in many isolated locations in rural Honduras. In every village we visited there was evidences of contaminated water. Most of the villages water sources are from mountain springs and heavy rain runoff. It has come to my attention that Honduras suffered flooding recently due to heavy rain and that Proyecto Aldea Global, PAG (Project Global Village) was involved in the relief effort, I offered our surplus of WAPIs to assist in their recovery effort.

The WAPIs works, folks!
Time after time we were blessed in our effort with our research for the units given out in the past two years. Every Botiquine (small First Aid stations) had WAPIs to share with the local residences, some actually need more, they had run out, so I shared some we had brought along.

Traveling all night by air Friday and into early Saturday took its toll, I was tired. Met my traveling companion, Jim Dunn, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, then off to Honduras we journeyed.

Saturday, we arrived at San Pedro Sula around 10 am, and arrived at our final destination in Belen Gualcho around eight pm. We stopped at our favorite Pizza place for lunch and into the Honduran mountains we went. Once off the beaten path, the countryside is breath taking. So many colors of green with rugged mountain structures growing the local flavor of coffee or cane sugar.

Sunday was rest and recuperation from the long two-day travel. We got some supplies from the local market place. No stores as we know them, and off to set up for Monday’s adventure of WAPI making.

As the photo shows, several PAG interns participated in assembling WAPIs with locals from previous year. It was a nice reunion for all. The only thing missing was my wife, Karen. Tears of joy and sadness were shared by all.

The workshop went very well and the Hondurans caught on very quickly. Each person went through every step learning the best way to do the task at hand. As they worked through each stage you could see a common sense of knowing this is saving lives, especially after what the Hondurans has been through. Many villages have been completely washed away from flooding that occurred recently. They made 200 units that day and the new hot air heat tools performed amazingly. Their WAPIs got better and better by each unit. They got it, their WAPIs look beautiful. Two different groups from different communities, Belen Guaqlcho and Sequatepecky, are about three hours away. So now there are two different groups that assemble and distribute the WAPIs in this section of Honduras. Our WAPIs are going where they are really needed.

I must give thanks to our Lord and Savior for His guidance along our path. He has opened my eyes to His Holy Spirit's presence in this whole affair. And many thanks to all of you for helping to make this all possible.

I was invited to go to Honduras by Tom Carter from Agua Pura Para El Pueblo. Tom and I have been associated for many years promoting clean water and sanitation in some of the poorest communities throughout Central America. Tom asked me to go as a representative of Agua Pura. I am honored and humbled. Thank you, Tom.

Testing water played a big part of our expedition into Honduras. Jim Dunn went one way and I went another. With Nolvin, our guide and leader of the group, we saw the Honduran countryside. Nolvin is a wonderful man who knows no limit for a four-wheel drive, and in the Honduran mountains that is a good thing, mud roads and all.

All the water we recovered tested positive for E-coli contamination which causes diarrhea. There is little or no knowledge of chlorine. They know the name chlorine but are unfamiliar with its usages. In time they will learn.

There is much work to do in helping the local residents of Honduras and they show their gratitude for any assistance shared. These are loving people and very compassionate. Seeing the joy in their hearts it is hard to hide the love we all share for one another.

As we enter a season of thanksgiving we should consider the many blessings we have and may take for granted, like something so simple as turning on the water.
Blessings to you all.
Bob
